Shahid Buttar, JD, ’03

Since graduating from Stanford Law school, Shahid Buttar has remained immersed in both social movements and poetry. He founded the DC guerrilla poetry insurgency in 2003, a few months after he and others launched a weekly outdoor poetry convergence at the corner of 16th and Mission in San Francisco that recently celebrated its 15th anniversary.

Buttar’s legal career transitioned quickly to work in the public interest: He organized an early legal challenge seeking marriage equality in 2004, led a national nonprofit for six years dedicated to fighting mass surveillance, and returned to SF from DC  to join the Electronic Frontier Foundation is the organization’s Director of Grassroots Advocacy. Now, he is running for Congress to challenge a 30 year incumbent on an anti-establishment, transpartisan, visionary progressive platform.
